Conferences
CHEC hosts the annual Colorado Home Educators Conference each year in June. This comprehensive 3-day event features nationally-acclaimed keynote speakers and over 100 workshops. These workshops have included a teen track, a support group leaders symposium, a special needs track, and a beginners' track. In 1999, CHEC incorporated a free "spouse" policy and added a "dads" track to support the involvement of fathers. CHEC provides a taping ministry for those who are unable to attend the workshops or the conference. A homeschool showcase gives students an opportunity to compete in music, art, photography, and writing. An exhibit hall is filled with vendors from all over the nation offering the very latest in educational materials for home educators as well as supplementary materials for after-school or summer activities. There are full-scale curricula, books and materials for specific subjects, traditional textbooks, integrated unit study materials and the "just for fun" extras--educational games, computer programs, videos, art supplies, science kits, encyclopedias, music programs, and more. In order to add convenience to homeschoolers on the western slope of Colorado, CHEC sponsored the first home education conference in Grand Junction in April, 2000. This western conference also includes key note speakers, workshops, teen track, and a complete vendor hall.
Public Policy
CHEC's public policy team watches for proposed state and/or federal legislation which may affect home educators. When an issue of concern arises, information is passed on to families through our quarterly news magazine, e-mail alerts, and our website. Each spring, CHEC organizes the Homeschool Day at the Capitol, an opportunity for home schooling families to visit the state capitol, participate in workshops, and enjoy a rally on the west steps. In the past we have had presidential candidates, senators, and the governor join us on the steps. This "field trip" helps demonstrate to your children how important it is to be involved in the civic affairs of our land. It has become a tremendous opportunity to make a positive statement for home education before our government representatives and the community at large. Over 1800 people participated in 2000!
Resources
Each year CHEC distributes thousands of Introduction to Homeschooling packets to families interested in home education. CHEC maintains a small bookstore of helpful books, videos, and tapes to help facilitate home schools and support groups. The CHEC Guidebook is a unique and important part of these resources.
News Magazine
The CHEC quarterly magazine, the Homeschool Update is mailed to about 12,000 families each year. The magazine serves as a communication tool for Colorado home educators and features special articles, teaching tips, legislative news, upcoming events, resources, and much more!
Website
CHEC's website (www.chec.org) is a way for families to learn more about home education in Colorado. This internet site carries information about the Colorado Home School Law, resources on getting started with home education, conference information, public policy updates, and much much more.
Community Awareness
CHEC reaches out to the community during the year with various special events. Representatives of CHEC are also available for radio and television interviews, workshops, panels, and other community forums. We take every opportunity to showcase the success of home education in our state.
Introductory Workshops
As more families consider the educational alternative of home education, CHEC recognizes the importance and need for a comprehensive introduction to the how, what, why, and where of homeschooling. These informative workshops are held on a regular basis (at least once per month), and are sometimes conducted in cooperation with local support groups in various locations around Colorado.
Spelling Bee
Beginning in 2000, CHEC has sponsored a Colorado state-wide spelling bee for homeschooled children in association with the Rocky Mountain News, as a qualifying bee for the Scripps Howard Colorado State Bee.
Speech and Debate
To provide opportunities for homeschool teens to cultivate their skills in forensics and speech, CHEC has provided speech and debate workshops as well as a statewide debate and speech contest. These workshops are typically 2-3 days of intensive work with involvement from each teen participant. The contest includes poetry recitations, non-original speeches, original speeches, and debate. Qualifying winners of the debate tournament will proceed to the national Home School Legal Defense Association debate tournament.
CHEC Library
CHEC maintains a library of several hundred books and tapes relating to home education. These materials are made available to CHEC's constituents on a loan basis. |
